How do I find a book in the library?
Fiction (books someone made up like novels) is alphabetized by author’s last name and then by title. For example, if I wanted to find Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, I would find it in the Fiction section, under Bradbury, after Dandelion Wine.
Non-fiction: Books with factual information are organized by subject, like Philosophy, Religion, Social Sciences, Language, Pure Sciences, Technology, the Arts, Literature, and History. Each subject is given its own number. For example, books about professional sports would be grouped together with a 796 number. Sports teams would be 796.3 and then alphabetized, ie. 796.3 Steelers would come after 796.3 Broncos.
All non-fiction is in numerical order, so all the 300’s would come after the 200’s; all the 400’s after the 300’s and so on.
What are Internet Contracts all about?
Internet Contracts are necessary in order for a student to access the computers on campus. The student and his or her parent/guardian must sign a contract and turn it into the librarian for an internet sticker. Make sure to have your GHS I.D card on you when turning in a contract, the sticker will be placed on the back. Students will be denied computer access until a contract is completed!
How do I get an Internet Contract?
You can get an Internet Contract by either going to the library and asking the librarian, or go to our Internet Contract page to download one.
What's the Dewey Decimal System?
Go to our Contact/'Ask a Librarian' page here.
What does SC mean?
Story Collection. The books which have a collection of books or short stories are in the fiction collection and marked with an “SC” sticker. They are alphabetical by author’s last name, or by title if there is no single author. A novel like Firestarter would be in Fiction under King, for Stephen King, but his collection of short stories Everything’s Eventual: 14 Dark Stories, would be under SC King. A short story is one that a reader can usually finish in one sitting.
Why are there fiction books in the non-fiction section?
Some books are designated as Literature, even if they are fiction. They can be found in the 800’s section. It can come in handy if your teacher assigns the same title to the class and all the ones under fiction are checked out.
What if I don’t know who wrote the book I'm looking for?
Try to remember as much of the title as you can. If you can’t remember any of the title, try searching under subject. You may want to ask the librarian, if all else fails. The computers on tables next to the stacks have the card catalog online. They are there for student use.
Why doesn’t the library have the book I’m looking for?
We do our best to provide the Student Body students with the most current information available. However, it can take a few months for the books to come in, and we may need to spend the money somewhere else. If there’s a book you are desperate for, request it and we’ll try to get it. In the meantime, you might want to try the public library.
When is the library open?
The library is open every school day from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. We are open before school, after school, during break and lunch. We are closed between 1-2 pm for lunch.
We may also be closed during tests or for special events. Check the bulletin for more information.
How much does it cost to make copies?
Photo copies are .15 per page, and we have a coin-fed copier available for student use.
How much does it cost to print from the computers?
Printing is .05 per page. You will be charged per page you print, not per page you need, so run a print preview and make sure you’re willing to pay for what you get.
Does the library have books in Spanish?
Yes, but we do not have a separate Spanish collection. All titles in Spanish are filed with the rest of our collection. A Spanish-language title will have a red band across the spine, and will say “Spanish” on the spine label.
How do I get an Internet sticker?
Copies of the District Computer Use policy are available at the library front desk, or you can download one from our Contract page. Take the contract home, fill it out, and have your parent or guardian sign and date it. Add your signature and return it to the library front desk. The librarian will take the contract, affix a sticker to your Student Body card and give you further instructions on using the computer. If you are over 18, you may sign the contract for yourself.
My Student Body card already has a space that says Internet. Why do I need a sticker?
In order to use any computer on campus, for any reason, even if you are just typing up an assignment, you need to have a Computer Use Contract on file in the library.
Why aren’t we allowed to play games on the computers?
The computers are for school use only. The library is not an arcade.
Why can’t I talk with my friends if they are working on a computer?
We aren’t trying to make your life miserable, honest. However, too many people on a computer means that the librarians cannot see what is happening on a computer, and sound echoes. The library is a place where students can research and study free of distractions. Please respect that and allow your fellow students to work in peace.
As you come into the library, what is that room to the right of the doorway?
That is the student art gallery. Soon we hope to have a rotating exhibit of student artwork.
Does the library have little kid books, such as picture books?
Yes, we have some. We have most of the Caldecott winners since 1939. We also have a few other favorites that students can check out.
What is the Newbery?
The Newbery Award is awarded for excellence in children’s (up to age 12) literature. It is given to one book each year, with several others taking Honors awards. The Caldecott is given to the best-illustrated children’s book published each year.
What books can I check out?
You can check out any book, fiction or non-fiction that is not marked “Reference.” Reference books stay in the library.
Why can’t I check out a Reference book?
Reference books are generally wider in scope, and more expensive, like encyclopedias and atlases. Some reference books have the most current information and need to be available for all students to use in the library.
How long can I have a book?
Books are due back fifteen school days from the time you check them out. Weekends and holidays do not count toward those days. If you need a little more time, bring the book back before it’s due, and if no one else is waiting for it, you can renew it for another three weeks. You cannot check out a book over the summer.
How many books can I check out?
You may check out as many books as you can carry. Just return or renew them on time.
I forgot my Student Body card. Can I still check a book out?
Yes, you may. Just come to the front desk with your book and we will look you up by your name. Next time, please bring your Student Body card, though..
I am 18. Do I still need an Internet sticker?
Yes, you still need an Computer Use Policy contract on file, but you can sign it yourself rather than have a parent sign it for you.
Why do I still owe money if I turned in the book?
If the book was turned in late (past the 15-school-days due date), you will be charged .05 per school day per book. Weekends and holidays do not count against you for fines, but the fines will continue to grow every school day until we have our book back. Once you bring the book back, you are still responsible for the fines. They do not grow anymore, but you may not be able to check out any more books until you pay them.
I turned the book back in, and now the office says I can’t graduate. Why?
You may owe fines or other charges. Come see us at the front desk and you can pay or otherwise resolve the matter.
Can I turn in my textbook to the library?
No. Please turn your textbooks into the bookroom.
I am transferring to a different school and I have never checked a book out.
Do I still need a signature on the Library Check Out space?
Yes, but it should only take a minute or two.
Someone has a book I want. Can I get it when it comes back in?
Yes. Have the librarian put a hold on the book, and we will let you know when your book comes in. Come to the library and check it out.
Where can I find a book about Edgar Allan Poe? (or someone else)
Biographies and autobiographies are found in the 920-921 non-fiction section. The 920 number means that several biographies are in the book, such as a collection of biographies about Famous American Women, or Famous Inventors. A 921 call number has a biography about one person. Biographies under 921 are alphabetized by subject’s last name. You would find books about Edgar Allan Poe under 921 Poe, or books about Sojourner Truth under 921 Truth, or books about Sacajawea under 921 Sacajawea.
Fiction (books someone made up like novels) is alphabetized by author’s last name and then by title. For example, if I wanted to find Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, I would find it in the Fiction section, under Bradbury, after Dandelion Wine.
